Contempo Styling

The Contempo style exudes comfort and welcome. It’s a modern look that’s constantly evolving without becoming cluttered or dark. The spaces in a Contempo home are open and airy and feature furniture with simple, natural fabrics such as wool, cotton, leather and linen.
The MyChoice Design Team have created four subsets within the style to help you really tailor your perfect Contempo home – Modern, Minimalist, Mid-Century Modern and Scandinavian.

HOW TO ACHIEVE CONTEMPO STYLING IN YOUR HOME
STREET ENVY

From the inside, window colours frame your outside view like a picture, so use black, silver or richer tones. A mix of external materials creates texture and contrast, but always keep them tonal. Use large windows to connect the outside to the inside. Light render colours frame a Contempo style façade.

COOKING IN THE KITCHEN

Use drawers without handles throughout the kitchen to create long lines and a streamlined aesthetic. Undermount kitchen sinks allow a beautiful benchtop to be the hero element. Choose tower cabinetry for a sense of scale and architectural feel. Integrate appliances to enhance the clean look.

BATHROOM BLISS

Continue a no-handle detail into your bathroom cabinetry to create continuity. Undermount sinks allow the design of the vanity itself to be the key feature. Wall mixers give bathrooms a clean open look.

UNDER YOUR FEET

Tiles work beautifully for main flooring in Modern or Minimalist styles. Use a large format tile to limit grout lines. Timbers bring warmth and are the first option for Mid-Century Modern and Scandinavian styles. Twist, loop or plush carpets create the perfect complement to the main floor selection.

MY STYLE TILE

Choose large and simple tiles to limit grout lines and continue the feeling of an open architectural space. For a seamless transition, use the same floor tile on splashbacks as you use on your walls. The use of simple geometric patterns are perfect for the Scandinavian style. Use shape changes in tiles rather than large contrast in colour.

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE

Lighting should be a feature in your Contempo home that doesn’t compete against the architecture of the space. Use step lights on the staircase to create shadow and highlight the beauty of your staircase design. Timber is a beautiful option for a pendant. Choose a tone featured in your furniture. Accents should be brushed or matte black to match the hardware in your home.

EYE FOR DETAIL

Shadow line cornices create clean lines and elongates the height of the room. Simple profiled skirtings and architraves allow the space to be the feature. One simple colour throughout will create a sense of a large open space. Use brushed or satin finished on all hardware throughout the home.
