Urban Styling

by

From steel and stone, to brick, brass and timber, the Urban style is all about raw, natural materials. Natural linens, chunky fabrics, throws and leather perfectly align to this style and when mixed with warm neutrals, create a subtle masculine touch.

The MyChoice Design team have created four subsets within the style to help you really tailor your perfect Urban home – Organic, Rustic, Industrial and South Western.

HOW TO ACHIEVE URBAN STYLING IN YOUR HOME

STREET ENVY

The Urban style is all about natural and exposed materials. When choosing materials for your façade, look for a textured brick with warmth and an edge of ruggedness. Create strength and contrast by using timber feature panelling on walls and ceilings.

COOKING IN THE KITCHEN

Brushed metals feature in tapware, sinks and accent details. Timber is key to this style so true grain and textural detail will bring this to life. Matte finishes on cabinetry enhance the natural look and will support the other raw elements in your home. Appliances enhance the introduction of metals so a freestanding oven and canopy rangehood are the perfect pairing.

BATHROOM BLISS

Timber plays a significant role in Urban styles, so choose raw and textured finishes. Use brushed metal features in tapware, sinks, and accent details. Use a basin with an organic or trough-like appearance. Concrete or natural stone inspired benchtops enhance the raw look.

UNDER YOUR FEET

Concrete is a key floor choice, and large concrete inspired tiles have the same effect as polished concrete with easier maintenance. Create and enhance texture in your home by using sisal or loop style carpets. Use colours in the flooring that are a reflection of the exterior for that all-important indoor-outdoor connection. Use rich colour tones in your flooring. Charcoals, deep browns, and greys are perfect.

MYSTYLE TILE

Continue the concrete theme of your home and use large concrete tiles on the floor and walls of wet areas. Use different shapes in the same tile finish to create texture and shadow. Timber tiles in wet areas enhance the historical feel of the Industrial and South Western styles. Subway tiles are perfect for the Urban style, particularly grey, charcoal, khaki or even black.

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE

Lights can be a mix of many materials. Ensure they make statement but don’t compete with surrounding elements. Brushed metallic finishes are a must but they needn’t match throughout. Introducing artisan elements to lighting has a great impact. Low wall lights create beautiful shadows and enhance flooring detail.

EYE FOR DETAIL

Black or brushed metal detail will deliver an utilitarian feel which is a truce interpretation of the Urban style. Exposed brackets and screws are a feature, so don’t feel the need to hide them. Timber wall panelling brings a connection to external landscape. Consider using in an entry, bedroom, or living room. Bring the outside in by using some of your external material on feature areas in your home.

Wilson’s Urban Industrial display home will be opening later this year in Latrobe, featuring  the great elements mentioned above.
